Maths: How we calculate
We appreciate that many parents feel unsure about the methods we use for calculation. When the national curriculum changed in 2014, there was a move back towards formal column methods. Attached at the foot of this page is a document which provides information about possible methods to use with your children for each operation (+ - x ÷) for each year group from Year 1 to Year 6. The year group is indicated in a small box in the top left corner of each page.
Over the next few days we will expand this section of the website to include a range of explanation videos for calculation processes.
How to: calculate using the column method for multiplication - Suitable for Years 4-6
Multiplying with two digit numbers multiplied by two digit numbers. Suitable for Years 4-6.
How to: calculate using the short division method - Suitable for Years 3-6
Dividing with a single digit number using the bus stop method.
How to: use the language of ratio - Suitable for Years 5-6
(P.S. I do know that an onion is a vegetable).

This video from Maths Antics explains ratio as fractions and using the standard ratio notation. It is a Youtube video so children should be supervised when watching it.
