Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We are called the Christopher Columbus Class, taught by Miss Shallcross.

Term 1

We have done lots of work to help us feel settled in the classroom. Paddington bear was a focus for us in literacy. We used Paddington to inspire our stories and some key pieces of writing that the children complete. They really enjoyed their literacy with Paddington bear and when he went missing, we immediately made posters to help everyone look for him. Our posters, being so well written and descriptive, enabled us to find Paddington – YAY!

Term 2

We looked and learnt at a book called Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke. This was a great book that the children enjoyed a great deal, especially when the bus was being naughty!  We looked at alternative endings, our favourite part, character descriptions and much more. The story influenced great interest and amazing pieces of writing.

Term 3

We have been using the Great Fire of London to inspire our writing in English. We have been exploring diary writing, newspaper reports, recounts and letters. We have looked at lots of different books to help us understand how the fire happened and what happened next.

Term 4

Design and Technology has been this term's focus. We learnt about the function of wheels and axles. The children brought in cardboard boxes from home to create their fire engine designs.  We explored different ways of making wheels and axles and created designs to individually create our own functional fire engines.

Term 5

This term we learning all about The United Kingdom and we will be going to Forest School on Tuesdays.
